INSIDER TIPS 〰️
Whether you're ready to trade in the artificial for something real this holiday season, or you’re a real-tree loyalist looking to up your game, we’ve got some great tips for you. Remember, a fresh-cut Christmas tree is more than just décor—it's an experience, an incredible scent that fills your home, and a tradition that makes the holidays truly special.
Here’ are 7 things you need to know before heading out to pick the perfect tree:
1. Measure Twice, Cut Once (Well, Sort Of)
Know your space before you shop. Measure the height of your ceiling and don’t forget you’ll need room for the topper! You’ll also want to consider width—especially considering trees often look smaller outside than they do inside your home.
2. Dress for the Adventure
Tree shopping is an outdoor activity, so dress warm and wear sturdy boots. You’ll also want to bring gloves. Pine needles, sap, and (maybe?) snow are all part of the fun, but you’ll still be glad you planned for them.
3. Know Your Tree Types
Not all evergreens are created equal! Douglas firs are known for their classic Christmas tree scent while Colorado Blue Spruce are known for strong branches that hold heavy ornaments well. Chat with your local tree farmer (like us at Treetop Acres!) for recommendations. You can also learn more about the trees we have, here.
4. Check the Freshness
A fresh tree is a happy tree. Run your hand along a branch—needles should stay put and feel pliable. Give it a shake; minimal needle drop is a good sign.
5. Bring the Right Gear
If you’re cutting your own, many farms (like ours) supply saws and twine, but it doesn’t hurt to check ahead. Don’t forget an old blanket or tarp to protect your car from sap and needles.
6. Prep for Home
Once you’ve got your tree, cut an inch off the trunk before placing it in water. A fresh cut helps it absorb water and stay fresh longer. And yes, your tree drinks A LOT—keep that stand filled!
7. Make it a Memory
Don’t rush the process! Grab some cocoa, snap some photos, and make a day of it. Buying a real tree is as much about the experience as the tree itself.
